Sicilmarmi was born in Custonaci (Sicily) in 1948 when Dr. Giacomo Caruso, later named “Cavaliere del Lavoro”, discovered a new marble variety in the nearby Cofano Mountain; he realized at once the potential of this material and soon started quarriyng it under the name of Perlato Sicilia Cofano® (literally “pearl of Sicily”). The market demand grew so much that, by the early ’70s, the company was able to acquire other quarries in Italy and to relocate in Massa under the name of Marmi e Graniti d’Italia; the production of Perlato Sicilia Cofano® went on and Sicilmarmi kept its identity as a consociated firm of the MGI group. Nowadays Sicilmarmi primarily sells blocks on the N. African, Middle Eastern and Asian markets, also supplying slabs, tiles and cut to size products; Marmi e Graniti d’Italia Sicilmarmi group is among the top Italian companies in the stone industry.

The Cofano quarry

The Perlato Sicilia Cofano® quarry owned by Sicilmarmi, is located on the Cofano Mountain, a dolomitic promontory with a quote of 660 meters above sea level, that faces the Gulf of Bonagia in the Trapani province. The origins of the promontory date back to the Triassic period (250-200 million years ago), following the uplifting movements of underwater sea shell deposits, transformed into stone over the course of the centuries; these same fossils are the “pearls” that create the unique texture of the Perlato Sicilia Cofano® marble. The extraction activity of Sicilmarmi is concentrated on the south side of the mountain facing the town of Custonaci, next to several quarries that are now operating in the area, after the intuition of Cav. Dr. Caruso and the success of the Perlato Sicilia Cofano®.

Perlato Sicilia Cofano®

The Perlato Sicilia Cofano® displays a beige background, enriched by arabesques in light brown tones and inclusions of ivory colored calcite; the latter, recalling features of the mother-of-pearl, suggested the name for this marble. Three are the main characteristics of the Perlato Sicilia Cofano® by Sicilmarmi:

  • Brightness” – The Perlato Sicilia Cofano® shows a noticable level of brightness, not typical of most marbles, when polished; the material however, doesn’t lose its beauty also with different kind of finishing like: honed, sandblasted and vintage.
  • Hardness” – The Perlato Sicilia Cofano® is a very solid and compact material, with a high compression strenght and a low absorption by weight percentage; thanks to these features, the Perlato Sicilia Cofano® can be safely used for outdoor installations, where common marbles would instead show many restrictions.
  • Uniformity” – One of the most crytical aspects of natural stone usage is the lack of uniformity in the background and/or in the veinings, which could represent an issue in many kind of projects; the Perlato Sicilia Cofano® avoids the problem offering a good uniformity both of colors and textures.
